Professional Male Commercial Voice Overs

Commercials are everywhere. They are an unavoidable part of modern life: they’re on the radio, the television, the internet, in movie theaters, on podcasts and streaming services . . . the list goes on! Wherever content is distributed, so are ads. And while we aren’t always happy to endure them, thanks to the creativity of today’s commercial creatives and producers, we can often appreciate and even enjoy them. Ad execs figured out some years ago that their ads would be better received if they had more in common with the content they were interrupting. They needed to draw their audience in, to engage them, to capture their interest. In other words, they needed to tell a story – and that story usually needed a voice.

Brian Arens Voice Overs Your Ad Here

What Makes a Great Commercial?

Before the revelation mentioned above, commercials often did little more than convey information.  What’s on sale? Where? When? Why should I buy this ACME widget? But while those “basic” ads still exist, today a commercial needs to do more than that to make an impression. It needs to make you laugh. Or make you cry. Or make you feel . . . something. To resonate with you in some way. To leave you with a wry smile, or a raised eyebrow, or a tear running down your cheek. Oh, and it often needs to do it in as little as 6 seconds.

Commercial Voices of Yore

Just as commercials have evolved, so have the voice overs that have always been integral to them. Gone are the days of the booming announcer (with a few exceptions, mostly for comedic effect - in fact, you can find one such exception in Brian Arens’ commercial voice over demo). That guy - and it was almost always a man - sounded authoritative, powerful, and commanding, because apparently what worked at the time was to have your high school principal sell you stuff.  Loudly.

A New Era of Commercial Voice Overs

With the rise of storytelling in commercials, the demands for commercial voice overs changed. The high school principal gave way to the best friend, the neighbor, the guy next door (and thankfully, the girl next door too). More often than not, commercial voices eventually came to be relatable, casual, friendly, and conversational. Of course, when creatively done there was (and is) still plenty of room for the big, powerful voice; the inspiring anthemic voice; the funny, whacky voice; and the gritty, rugged voice. But by and large, “regular guy” (and gal!) voiceovers became the law of the land. (And yes, Brian Arens’ commercial demo has that kind of read, too.)

Modern Commercial Trends

The conversational read still dominates much of the commercial landscape, but lately, with a changing social climate has come a shift in how we are marketed to. A hybrid style of read is gaining traction - one that blends the newer, relatable persona with something of the older, authoritative tone. He (when it’s a man) is still a regular guy, but he definitely knows what he’s talking about. He has the facts, and the courage of his convictions, but the way he expresses them makes you feel welcome, not lectured to.  (No man-splaining here!)  We might call it  The Voice Of Certainty, or  The Voice Of Confidence.  (And is there just such a sample in Brian Arens’ commercial demo, you ask? Why yes! Yes there is.)
