Multiple Award Nominated Male Audiobook Narrator
Brian Arens has been reading books out loud for a long time: first, as a third grade teacher for classrooms full of children, and more recently as a professional audiobook narrator and voice actor. He adores content of all kinds, from silly kids’ books to sweeping dramatic sagas. But he is delighted to be focused mainly on non-fiction titles as a narrator, since his own love of learning has led him to loiter endlessly in bookstores and on campuses (eventually earning three post-secondary degrees). Brian is a four time One Voice Award nominee for best narration of a non-fiction audiobook.

The Rise of the Machines
Recently the genie got out of the bottle and synthetic voices (non-human voices generated by artificial intelligence) began to flood the audiobook market. There is no doubt that these fake voices have come a long way, and now do a decent job of mimicking human sounds and inflections . . . for brief periods. And such voices will almost certainly find a place in the industry taking on titles that qualified human narrators will never get around to, as there are exponentially more books published than there are narrator hours available.
The Value of Human Narration
But, as almost all listeners who have endured a full length audiobook “performed” by one of these soulless clones will tell you, their total lack of humanity, of communicative intent, of any ability to be present in the moment and respond to nuances in the text, makes the experience something to be borne as opposed to something to be enjoyed. There simply is no substitute for being told a story by a real human being. Storytelling is in our DNA. It is one of the fundamental human activities, something that connects us like nothing else. It is hardwired so deeply in our beings that no human-adjacent (way, way adjacent) storyteller will ever measure up.
